United Services for Children is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Tom Engle, our former Executive Director, on November 26, 2024. Tom’s leadership and dedication during our formative years left an indelible mark on our organization and the community we serve.
During his tenure from 1986 through 1993, Tom guided United Services through challenging times, helping to shape it into the community leader we know today. After Congress mandated that public schools guarantee early childhood special education programs, Tom was instrumental in negotiating contracts with local school districts, ensuring that United Services remained a trusted provider of these essential services. This pivotal work enabled United Services to expand its reach and impact.
In 1988, Tom oversaw the construction of United Services’ first bespoke headquarters on Old Mill Parkway in St. Peters, which served as our hub until 2023, when we moved to our current location in St. Charles. Tom also championed the organization’s Blue Ribbon Committee, which organized the annual fundraising gala, and was an active supporter of United Way of Greater St. Louis, one of our major funding partners.
Tom’s legacy of resilience and commitment continues to inspire us as we carry forward his vision for United Services for Children.
A visitation for Tom is scheduled for 1:30-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Blue Funeral Home-Cave Springs, 3950 W. Clay St. in St. Charles.
